How did you two meet?
Summer 2006 at the University of Georgia in Athens, GA is where God’s love story all began! Chrishona, just finishing her freshman year at Miles College in Birmingham, AL and Willie finishing his sophomore year at Winston-Salem State University in Winston-Salem, NC had both accepted a research internship and were about to meet for the first time.
One night a text message reading “Do we need to talk about the status of our friendship?” led them to solidify a fun-filled, family packed, long distance relationship for a year and a half. March 23, 2008 (Resurrection Sunday) God asked them to end the relationship and with broken hearts they did.
Willie went on to graduate from Winston-Salem State University and pursued getting into medical school when that was halted by him having to stay in Raleigh to help his mom take care of his grandma. Chrishona went on to graduate from Miles College as well as Eastern Virginia Medical School with her Master's Degree and moved to Greenville, SC.
February 11, 2017 (Valentine’s Day weekend) Chrishona and Willie reconnected as God would have it 9 years later and they became official once again in 2018. As before in the summer of 2006, a text message and God would bring these two back together. They talked, re-established a friendship, and had what they called “fun days” for over a year until God revealed to them that this union was predestined before they were in their mothers’ womb.
How did s/he pop the question?
I had just come downstairs from taking a shower while Willie gathered my family together and had my siblings in place to record his proposal in the living room. My hair was on top of my head, I was wearing blue shorts I had from my childhood, and my blue grad school t-shirt. I was not proposal ready and I had to go to the bathroom, so I was talking about that lol. As I was talking about Mother Nature (and embarrassing my self for future children to see) my mother was also trying to make sure she distracted me, so he could grab the ring from a hidden location. The ring was upstairs with me the whole time! Willie then asked if I could sit next to him on the sofa as I continued to go on. Meanwhile, my sister and brother are still recording. He proceeded to talk about how we first met, and I quickly said, “you’re not really doing this right now lol?!” I was now in the group of engaged women who say they didn’t hear anything else. I remember we saying (in my OutKast voice) forever ever, then he grabbed the box and popped the question on one knee. It was not how I expected it to happen, but I wouldn’t change it at all!
Any advice on the perfect proposal? (groom)
Definitely speak with all parties involved ahead of time. Ensure everyone will be available and check on the venue/location availability. Lastly, relax and take your time.
How long have you two been together?
We dated for 1.5 years in college from 2006 to 2008 (long distance), then separated for 9 years. We reconnected in 2017 and remained friends for 1 year, then courted again in 2018. We got engaged on July 14th, 2018.
What do you love most bout your partner?
Groom: Her personality, openness to new things, loyalty to family and friends, and love for laughter
Bride: His commitment to God, confidence, intellect, and that I can be myself around him
Where is the Ceremony? Reception?
The Ceremony and Reception will be held at Noah's Event in Morrisville, NC
Tell me about the details you’re most excited about for your upcoming wedding!
We're looking forward to being able to host our first party as the Gilbert's. We're both also excited about seeing our family and friends.
What style do you envision for your wedding day?
Classy with a party-like feel during the reception.
What do you want to remember about you two right now?
Groom: I want to always remember how strong of a connection we felt when we first met as well as when we reconnected. We both describe the feeling as electricity, and always attributed it to Gods master plan for us. When we reconnected after 9 years, the same powerful feeling was present again. We will always remember the feeling that resulted from God reigniting our relationship.
